As Hong Kong’s population ages, many designers are applying technology to products for the elderly, such as Knitwarm’s team, which focuses on fabric-warming patented care products for the silver hair market. Their new products, the WarmerBand and the HarnessWarmer, help alleviate the coldness in the hands and feet of the elderly.
Relieve Fatigue: WamerShoulder
Scientific research can improve quality of life, and many newly developed products not only improve the quality of life for the elderly but also increase their confidence. Developed by Knitwarm’s design team of designers Stanley Kwok, Stephen Ng, and Regina Kwok, the 'WarmerShoulder’ is a boon for the elderly. It not only won the 2022 New York Product Design Award (Silver Award) but also won the Gold Award for Wellness & Personal Care in the 2024 Hong Kong Smart Design Awards. The product has been exhibited at trade events hosted by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. Simply connect the ‘WarmerShoulder’ to a power bank, and it will heat up within 30 seconds. The principle is to use 3D knitting technology to weave conductive yarn plated with pure silver into the fabric along with other materials, creating a soft and flexible circuit that heats up when powered.
Stephen Ng, director of KnitWarm, said, ‘The product design is mainly aimed at the silver hair market. Many elderly people suffer from cold hands and feet and are prone to muscle tension. We consulted with physiotherapists and successfully developed it. It is made of seamless, thin fabric with intelligent knitting patents that can cover the shoulders comprehensively, providing gentle warmth to relieve shoulder discomfort, improve blood circulation, relieve fatigue, and muscle tension.’ Director Stanley Kwok added, ‘The weight of the fabric is also important. The product weighs only 88 grams, allowing users to engage in their daily activities without hindrance.’ It excels in both appearance and practicality, meeting the needs of the elderly. In addition to the ‘Shoulder Warming Support,’ the brand has also introduced smart health warming belts, knitted eye masks, heated back supports, and heated chair covers. Co-director Regina Kwok further mentioned that product design is not limited to the elderly but also targets individuals in need of health care, such as athletes and those engaged in long-term labor.
